Let There Be Light and Water

Now you can have both in one piece of gear. The Lightcap is a water bottle that has a solar powered LED light on the top. Here are the details on the review from Gadgetell.

As the name suggests, this is a multi-purpose ware. it is a water bottle (you know very well the usage of this), and at the same time, it is also a LED light source that can last for hours, and to top things off, it is 100% powered by solar energy! That means you wont have to spend a penny to buy batteries or to pay for your electric bills for charging the light!

All it needs is a 12 hour charge under direct sunlight. (Seems quite a donkey’s years, but wait till you hear how long the light can last!). The light comes with two versions, you can choose either to use the red light or bright white neon light. The red light would last up to 18 hours of continuous usage, and the white light will last up to 10 hours! So it’s totally worth a 12 hours charge! Besides, it’s not like you have to pay for the charging. It’s fully sponsored by mother nature!

So there you go! this tool is no other but perfect for those who like to travel and carry out outdoor activities such as camping and hiking, and this water bottle has a capacity of a total of 30 oz water too!
Below is some additional information:

* Handy waterproof switch on the cap that lets you change from the white LED (bright), to red (preserves your night vision), or turn it off completely
* On a full charge (12 hours in direct sun) the white LED will last 8-10 hours and the red LED will last 16-18 hours
* 3″ wide mouth makes it easy to fill, mix things, clean and dry, and drink without hitting your nose
* Bottle is dishwasher safe, but cap requires light handwashing
* Uses two rechargeable AA Ni-Cad batteries (replaceable)
* Dimensions: 8.25″ tall and 3.75″ wide
* Weight: 10.8 oz.

Lightcap

Could be interesting. I will have to try it when I get my hands on it.

Olympus Stylus 770 SW Review

I blogged about the camera a little while ago cause I thought it was so cool. I finally did get one and I am happy I did. I took it out this weekend to maple canyon to go rockclimbing.

The camera is small so it fits in your pocket and you hardly notice it. We set up a jug line and took some pictures are the minimum wall. The part I don’t like about taking my camera climbing with me is that they always get gunked up with chalk and dirt. However after this trip I learned that you can easily clean this camera. You just put it in a bowl of water. Then you open and close the shutter a couple of time and you’re done.

Tubin 2

The next day I took it down the weber river in a tube. This was a good test to see how waterproof it really was. It passed with flying colors. I didn’t have to take any extra precautions. I just put the lanyard around my wrist and floated along. I sometimes just let it hang it the water. It took great pictures and worked flawlessly. The waterproofing drew me to the camera but it has many other features that make it as bomb proof as possible. Read the previous post abou the other protective qualities the camera has.

Powder Corp. Shame on You

I found a posting on Wicked Outdoorsy about what Park City’s Powder Corp. is doing to the lifetime pass holders at Killington. The ski resort they just bought last week. Here is the story. Rutland Hearld Story They basically said they are not going to honor the lifetime passes that people have had since 1960-1. So much for trying to maintain goodwill with the locals. Its all about the dollar for those guys.

They have agreed to give those pass holders another two years before they expire. Apparently Powder Corp did there homework and did not buy the existing company and just the land and facilities. Therefore they claim that they are not required to honor the previous companies liabilities. We’ll see if this holds up in court or not.

I don’t know if honoring the lifetime passes is really a financial drain on the company. They could be fully transferable and handed down to relatives. However I would think that it wouldn’t be that big of deal since it really doesn’t increase any variable costs they would incur. Its just a shame that a Powder Corp would immediately announce right after they bought the resort the expiration of lifetime passes. Not the best PR approach I’ve seen but maybe the negative publicity is good publicity.

How to Prevent Blisters

Another tid bit of valuable information found on Lifehacker. They use Bodyglide to prevent blisters on with new shoes, but its good to have for anytime where you can feel a blister coming on. Now it even comes with sunscreen, so you can kill two birds with one stone. It won’t run into your eyes when you sweat and its non-greasy. Try one out today, it’s a lifesaver.

Sweet way to check out your line on El Cap or Angel’s Landing

This site has zoomable high resolution pictures of several big walls. You can zoom it and out. Its kind of like Google earth for the faces of El Cap, Half Dome, Angel’s Landing and a few others. xRez is a cool project that is fun to play around with. I looked to see if I could find some climbers on one of the walls. I couldn’t but maybe you can. There are also pictures of cities as well. You can check out what that couple is doing in the secluded portion of the park.

Utah Already Regretting Keyword Protection

Legislators are already regretting their bill that allows companies to trademark keywords. It is causing problems for some of the states bigger online retailers. Overstock, Ebay, as well as others are having problems listing their products since some of them conflict with protected keywords. The government is allowing the bill to go into effect however the database of trademarked keywords will not be activated until a better way of applying the trademark protect is determined.

Its funny how quickly this proved to be a bad idea. I mentioned in an earlier entry that this was not a good idea and hear we have it. It hasn’t even gone into effect yet and the problems are mounting up. Hopefully they will abandon the effort all together.

For people who are in the Salt Lake Area

Come support the Salt Lake Climbers’ Alliance at the annual fundraising comp and party on May 3, at The Front Climbing Club in Salt Lake City. It should be a great time with music, food, drinks and tons of schwag to give away. Proceeds will be used for bolt and anchor replacement in the local canyons. For more information, go to www.saltlakeclimbers.org or http://www.frontslc.com. The SLCA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that exists to promote climbing opportunities, preserve local access and encourage stewardship of the environment.
