I recently came to know about a car rental company here in Salt Lake City. The company is called Western Road Trips. They had a different approach to the game. They rent hybrid and camper vans. The type of cars you can’t typically get from Hertz or Dollar. Those wishing to rough it or take road trips, this is a great alternative. Hotel not needed with the pop up Volkswagen Camper Vans. However if you are just looking to minimize your carbon footprint while driving around you can rent one of their Prius’s or their Honda Elements. Either way they provide a sorely needed alternative to the big chain rental car rentals. I hear they fill up fast for the summer, so if you’re interested call them sooner than later.
They will even pick you up at the airport to give you you’re car. I met the owners and he seems to be very customer service oriented. I would suggest giving it a try for the next camping, climbing, biking or any other type of outdoor road trip in the Mountain West area.

The week has come to Salt Lake, home of Campman, for most of the Outdoor Industry to show off their wares. The first couple of days were spent mostly walking around trying to take in the overwhelming amount of gear. Right now its the winter market and so most companies are showing off next years fall lines. You can still see what is selling now but the excitement usually revolves around what is the next hot piece of gear. The Gear Junkie did a nice little write up on some of the bigger manufacturers new products. However my goal was to find some smaller companies with some cool new products. Here are the few that caught my eye.
1. Brooks Range Mountaineering Sled
This ingenious little item allows mountaineers, search and rescue, and guides to tow injuries people out on their own skis by making a sled out of them. The compact system folds up extremely small so it easily fits in a packs. Its a great addition especially for professional guides. This company also makes mountaineering tools like their map tool and ski guide reference cards.

2. Hydroid by N2K Corp
They make a little gauge the slips in between you hydrations bladder hose and bite valve in order to let you know how much water you have in your bladder. While you could just stop and take you pack off and look this will let you know without you having stop what you are doing. It will also allocate you reserve so you can keep a steady flow of liquids in you while out and about. Its light and compact so you won’t be inconvenienced by it. It would work great for hiking, biking and skiing. You’ll never have to wonder how much water you have left.
3. Skins Compression Clothing
A new line to the US of performance clothing. A big hit in Australia the company has its sights on the US market. Going up against the likes of Under Armour and 2XU. It supposedly reduces soreness, increases endurance, and increases venous return. The technology is proven and used in the medical field to help with ailments associated with circulation problems. These guys have just modified it for everyday use. I was given a free pair at the show but I haven’t tried them yet. I am still a little hesitant about rocking the spandex again, but next training session I’m putting them on. They have all sorts of sizes and designs depending on your needs.

4. Ground Clothing
These guys are an up and coming brand. We started carrying them about 2 months ago. They have great product design and if you are hardcore about performance apparel then check out their jacket and pant lines. They use eVent in a lot of their jackets, which is more breathable than Gore-Tex. I just got their Extension Shell and its an amazing jacket. It fits nice, looks good, and incredibly breathable. I got a peek at their new designs for next year and they all will have Recco reflectors built in.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Outdoor Daily, it is the website where we feature one item a day for a special deal. It follows the daily deal model of selling one item at a time. Similar sites include Dailymemories.com, Steepandcheap.com, and Woot.com. It has been up and running for several months and gaining in popularity. So if you are not familiar with the daily deal format go check out the site. It only sells one item at a time and it changes every night at 11pm MST. Bargain hunters beware its an addictive way to shop. Once you start looking at daily deal websites you’ll start checking everyday.

Its time once again for the Outdoor Retailer show. The greatest place to check out all the newest and greatest outdoor equipment for the year. Its a sensory overload for any gear whore like myself. Along with the gear are tons of activities and all the beer you can drink. This year will feature a beer pong tournament. I even hear one of the companies is bringing in The Roots to play a concert at Port O Call.
This is my pre-show excitement generator. I will report on the new products about to hit the market later in the week. So if your in the area try and get a pass and check out the best show in town. You might see your favorite action sports hero. I know that all the big time climbers will be in town for the bouldering championships on Saturday. It will be held on the top level of the Shilo Hotel Parking lot. That should be entertaining as well.

Well since my last post was about beer and I found another interesting piece of info on beer, I guess its ok to post another beer related article. Well apparently Canadian brewers have developed a beer that helps reduce cholesterol. They have several ingredients that have studies demonstrating their abilities to reduce LDL counts. Which is the bad form of cholesterol. Here is an excerpt from the article from Gadgetell.
A new light beer from Canada claims that if you drink two a day, your overall cholesterol and LDL cholesterol numbers will drop. Seriously.
The secret to Heart Start beer lies in two parts: plant sterol and barley beta glucan. The FDA states that the plant sterol reduces overall and LDL cholesterol numbers. The beta glucan has been clinically proven to lower cholesterol and increase satiety for weight watching hopefuls, and even yields the ability for humans to fly. Ok, I made that last one up.
A beer your doctor will ok? Sounds good to me.
Pass me one to go with my brats!

I found a posting on Wicked Outdoorsy about what Park City’s Powder Corp. is doing to the lifetime pass holders at Killington. The ski resort they just bought last week. Here is the story. Rutland Hearld Story They basically said they are not going to honor the lifetime passes that people have had since 1960-1. So much for trying to maintain goodwill with the locals. Its all about the dollar for those guys.
They have agreed to give those pass holders another two years before they expire. Apparently Powder Corp did there homework and did not buy the existing company and just the land and facilities. Therefore they claim that they are not required to honor the previous companies liabilities. We’ll see if this holds up in court or not.
I don’t know if honoring the lifetime passes is really a financial drain on the company. They could be fully transferable and handed down to relatives. However I would think that it wouldn’t be that big of deal since it really doesn’t increase any variable costs they would incur. Its just a shame that a Powder Corp would immediately announce right after they bought the resort the expiration of lifetime passes. Not the best PR approach I’ve seen but maybe the negative publicity is good publicity.

Legislators are already regretting their bill that allows companies to trademark keywords. It is causing problems for some of the states bigger online retailers. Overstock, Ebay, as well as others are having problems listing their products since some of them conflict with protected keywords. The government is allowing the bill to go into effect however the database of trademarked keywords will not be activated until a better way of applying the trademark protect is determined.
Its funny how quickly this proved to be a bad idea. I mentioned in an earlier entry that this was not a good idea and hear we have it. It hasn’t even gone into effect yet and the problems are mounting up. Hopefully they will abandon the effort all together.

A friend sent me a link to this service. Green Dimes is a service that will contact junk mailers and get you off their list. This works for credit card companies and catalog mailers. The service is $36 dollars for the year and they plant a tree every month for you as well. You can also add another person of the same household for $3 more. Essentially the service costs a dime a day. While they are for profit, I like the idea and it is good for the environment.
Check out the site for more details and statistics on how many trees and water consumption you can conserve.

Sure saving the environment is a nice thing to do, but a lot of times it costs the consumer more. For example Campman.com is going to print all our T Shirts on Bamboo Shirts. These shirts are at least twice as expensive if not more. The Shirts are softer, breathable, and naturally anti-bacterial. Will consumers pay more? I think that some will. However I think a lot of people will pass due on price. It seems like the thing to do now a days. The latest Fortune magazine has Patagonia on the cover.
The latest Outside has Arnold on it and is the “Green Issue”.

I hope this trend does continue as it seems to be good for everyone. Only time will tell. But in the mean time our company will try and follow the new trend and see what happens.
